Agile has been a buzz word in the tech and software development space for a couple years now. The Agile methodology was intended to provide a more flexible approach to traditional software development methods, and to provide portions of the product to the client earlier instead of providing all of the product at the end of a long development cycle. Not every project will mesh well with the Agile approach, and as with all things in business, it is more about the execution than the plan. Agile provides a framework with an intensive meeting structure and process, but in a more real definition of the word, you may be more agile by picking out the components of the framework that work for your specific project. Remember that every project and situation are unique, and while you can pull from best practices like Agile, you still need to tailor your approach to your specific environment. Happy coding!

Ever heard the phrase “not enough time in the day”? We all have the same amount of time in the day, 24 hours, and it’s the same every day. What we do with that time is our own decision, and should be based on our priorities. If you or your employees are finding yourselves unable to get everything done in time, then perhaps it’s time to re-prioritize. Put every task in one list, categorize each task, measure the level of complexity of each, then rank them in order of priority. If there’s still not enough time to complete the priorities, then we can take a look at work efficiency, process improvement, or outsourcing. Time is a crazy thing.

Meetings are inevitable, and sometimes they’re unbearable. Use these tactics to keep your meetings effective and efficient:
- Provide a written agenda to all attendees
- As part of the Agenda, include a background on what you’re discussing, and the intended outcomes of the meeting. Intended Outcomes help you drive to a desired solution. Speak to these things up front, so everyone is on the same page before the discussion starts
- Assign a note taker. This person should not be an essential part of the discussion. Their intention is to observe and report. These can help note the actual findings in the discussion, as well as note where anything got off track, so you can improve meeting time in the future.
- Create a sidebar / table to place unrelated topics that come up during discussion. Unrelated means they do not help to achieve the Intended Outcomes. Tabling a discussion doesn’t mean you’re neglecting it, just means it is not the intended use of the existing meeting time. You can come back to these topics if time permits after the Intended Outcomes are achieved
- Summarize the outcome of the meeting to receive acknowledgment from all parties, and determine the Next Steps / Action Items . This ensures that action will be taken after the meeting towards the decided upon outcomes

No matter what, you must always know your numbers. There’s so much behind them that can guide your path to success. At a bare minimum, you must always know how much it costs you for each individual product or service you provide, how much it costs to acquire a customer to purchase that product or service, and how much you’re making off of each individual product or service. It’s far too frequent that small business owners don’t have that basic formula down, don’t fully know how much its costing them to get a customer in the door and make the sale. Behind each of those numbers are factors that can help you make decisions. Decisions on how/where to reduce costs, how/where to streamline your processes, where to focus your efforts, and how to optimize your business model. The goal is simple income > expenses. Now let’s dive into those numbers and get you there.

Every business is like a snowflake, it's unique, yet shares similar properties to the others. Each business takes on unique challenges and obstacles which require unique solutions, but we can pull from past successful experiences and benchmark off of other similar businesses to acheive a positive outcome. There’s no cookie-cutter solutions to making your business successful. You don’t need to re-invent the wheel, but you need to think outside the wheelhouse sometimes to identify the right approach. What is a consultant? A consultant can be a number of things and provide a number of different services from very specific projects to general advice. Consultants should be an expert in their field or area of service; someone who is educated and experienced in their area of service and can pull from the knowledge they’ve obtained to help others in similar situations. Sometimes a consultant can just be an outside perspective who can look at things without bias or judgment. Sometimes a consultant can take on work you just don’t have the time or capacity to do in-house. A lawyer consults on legal situations, a doctor consults on medical situations, and a business consultant consults on business.
