What an incredible day for a race and way to come back to an in person event! Saturday was our 3rd Annual 5K and it was quite a success! We had over 180 registrants and 145 finishers! Our Overall Winner was a 14 year old male at 19:25! Thankfully the weather held out, with only a few sprinkles at the start of the race. Everyone enjoyed LIVE music by Paper Airplanes, a Food Truck, Selfie Photo Booth, and of course, BEER (thank you Rolando and Marian) at the finish line.

Thank you again to the many behind the scenes volunteers and of course our sponsors. It truly takes a village and great neighbors to make this event possible.

This week, we sent some of our members to EMS World Expo in Atlanta. Members spent the week getting hands-on training, attending lectures, and networking with other EMS and medical providers from around the country and world. These opportunities will let our members bring new knowledge and ideas back to our community here in Ashburn and Loudoun County.

Have you registered for our 5K race yet? If not, you are in luck, because there’s still time. This is a point to point race starting at AVFRD on Ashburn Road and concluding at House 6 Brewing Company on Atwater Drive. Come out and support us and have a few beers, too.

We’d also like to recognize our race sponsors. Without them we couldn’t have put this race on. Special thanks goes out to House 6 Brewing Company as our partner and event host. At the Platinum Level are Janelia Research Campus and Mainstreet Bank. Our Gold Level sponsors are Gate Gourmet, Williams Martial Arts and Fitness, and Sunbelt Rentals. Thank you!!

We all know milk, medicine and batteries expire, but did you know your smoke alarm does, too? Since 3 out of every 5 home fire related deaths are from fires in homes with no working smoke alarm it is important to understand when and how to replace either the battery or the entire unit. The life expectancy of smoke alarms is 7-10 years. Over time the sensors degrade and lose sensitivity to detect smoke, even with regular battery changes. Newer models that come with a 10 year sealed battery eliminate the need to change the battery, but not the need to replace it. Checking the date is easy. On the back of all models a date is printed. The format for various brands and placement may be a little different, but they all are on the back and are the manufacture date not an expiration date. If there is no date the alarm is over 10 years old and needs to be replaced.

So, the next time you hear a chirp, it may not be the battery. Check the date because you may need to replace the entire thing.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has designated October 2021 as Fire Prevention Month, with this year’s theme as “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety”. This month we will be passing along tips to aide in keeping you and your family safe. The focus will be on understanding the beeps and chirps made by smoke alarms. What do they mean and how you need to respond to them. And of course we’ll throw in some general safety information as well. Our goal is to inform, as well as protect.

A team of AVFRD golfers competed in the 6th Annual Martin Klaiber Memorial Golf Tournament at River Creek Country Club on September 27, 2021. They beat out 40 other teams to tie for 1st Place. Additionally other members provided support, gifts and information to the community during the event.

This golf tournament celebrates Martin Klaiber's life on the course he lived, loved and strived to master - all while giving back to the organizations that give hope and save lives every day. Proceeds go to benefit three local organizations the Loudoun First Responders Foundation, Washington Regional Transplant Community and Tails of Hope.

AVFRD added 6 firefighters, and 12 EMTs to its ranks. Additionally, two new Advanced EMTs were promoted to the ranks, with one (Adil Ather) being named Top Student.

Last night Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue System held a ceremony to recognize volunteer students from across the county who completed either the Firefighter II, EMT, or Advanced EMT course from Spring and Summer of 2021.

Michael R. Turner, Loudoun County Supervisor, Ashburn District was the keynote speaker and reminded these new recruits to “never forgot who they serve” - the economically and culturally diverse community of Loudoun. He also reminded them to “never forget why they serve” and that this may be their third call after midnight, but this was this person’s first. And to always remember “it is an honor to serve”.

The Firefighter II class was the pilot of a new course combining modules that used to be taught. This class was unique in that of the 36 students, 13 were women. The Top Student Award was presented to a female, proving that fighting fires not all about brawn.

Please join us in saying Congratulations and well done to all!

While we are quite often on the receiving end of the generosity of our neighbors, occasionally we get to give back. This past weekend our volunteer membership was able to assist a family of refugees from Afghanistan who are new to Ashburn. They fled with only what they could bring on their flight, which you can imagine was not much. A truck filled with household items and clothing was delivered to this astonished family as we welcomed them into our extended AVFRD family.

Today we pause here, and across the country to remember the thousands of lives lost on this day 20 years ago in the attacks on 9/11. We honor, not only those lives lost on that tragic day, but the thousands who are still suffering or have since died due to illness and injuries sustained in direct or indirect response to the terrorist attacks. Twenty years later the toll is still being paid and felt by the survivors, the families who lost loved ones, and the country that was forever changed by those 102 minutes. Today we stop to pay our respects particularly to the 343 firefighters who gave their all and made the ultimate sacrifice. And to recognize and thank the First Responders - police, fire and emergency service personnel, not only in Ashburn, but across our community and country – career and volunteers alike – that continue to serve, protect, and keep us safe each and every day.

AVFRD would like to announce that we have two new ALS (Advanced Life Support) providers! To obtain that level of distinction requires an immense amount of dedication. Starting with 1200 hours of classroom/clinical training, followed by 800 hours of training in the field. At that point they need to pass a written test, a skills evaluation and obtain a minimum of 75 calls for service in Loudoun with a preceptor. Start to finish it’s a minimum of 8-10 months. Considering they are volunteers, not paid/career individuals most are accomplishing this on top of their regular jobs and personal lives.

Think you have what it takes to join the ranks? Go to ashburnfirerescue.org and click on the “volunteer” tab.

September 1st kicks off National Preparedness Month and it seems apt that we are currently under a Tornado Watch until 7PM, a River Flood Watch until 7:45PM, and a Flash Flood Warning until 8:00AM September 2, 2021. This year’s theme is “Prepare to Protect”. Below is a link for a resource with information on how you can be ready for all kinds of disasters. The best way to ensure your family is safe is knowledge and being prepared! Remember to “turn around don’t drown”, it only takes less than 12 inches to carry away most cars. Be safe out there today!
