$1 million grant goes to record black women’s histories

The HistoryMakers, an oral archive that’s recorded the stories of more than 3,300 African Americans, launched The WomanMakers initiative with a $1 million gift from Ursula Burns, the former head of Xerox. “We have to value our own stories,” Burns said. The project will focus on recording the stories of black women.

Inventors, philanthropists, activists: Five exceptional girls and the parents who raised them

What does it take to raise a strong, successful, smart and caring girl? That’s the question Jordan Lloyd Bookey and Amy Joyce posed to the parents of five exceptional girls, including 13-year-old Naomi Wadler, who was the youngest speaker at the inaugural March For Our Lives.

We asked these parents what it takes to raise confident, curious daughters. Here's what they said.

Amazons were long considered a myth. These discoveries show warrior women were real.

The groundbreaking research, revealed this month by a team from the Institute of Archaeology at the Russian Academy of Sciences, revealed the women to be Scythian nomads who were interred at a burial site some 2,500 years ago, and suggest that they trained, hunted and battled alongside their male counterparts.

Although similar evidence has been found before, these women represented multiple generations of Scythian women, the first discovery of its kind. One expert told The Washington Post that the findings suggested young girls were trained early on, just like boys, to ride horses and use bows and arrows.

A growing body of archaeological evidence shows that legends about the horseback-riding, bow-wielding female fighters were almost certainly rooted in reality.

I hope to be of service to you through Praxis, LLC!

I am happy to share my passion and expertise in advancing equity by offering my services as a consultant. I think you know social and human justice is something that is deeply important to me. For the past 20 years, I have leveraged the voices of women, immigrant communities, and low-wage workers, through capacity building in equity, advocacy, and securing resources to fulfill their mission of social impact. I have launched Praxis, LLC to lead agencies to design and deliver practical solutions to problems of equity, diversity, access, and inclusion that will impact their bottom line. I am eager to deliver my deep “hands-on” leadership experience which will be helpful and productive in this historic moment. Democracy is a work-in-progress, and I have been involved in the work of those who live at the fringes, subject to numerous oppressions, yet demonstrate the courage to resist by giving voice to their struggles in order to spark change from below. Being able to hear and leverage such voices was a crucial part of my leadership development. Now, more than ever, at a moment where the economic and political decisions of today will lock-in how American democracy will operate for decades to come, I believe I am well-equipped to understand how an organization or an individual can build resources internally, across the different components of an organization, towards a multi-issue, cross-constituency, inter-sectional viable agency. If you have stopped by, thank you. Like my page so you can learn more about my work.
