This month’s featured employee is Jason Brookins. Since the rebuilding project has begun, Jason spends most of his days looking at blueprints, welding and putting together the machinery that will soon be the heart of the mill. He has been an employee at Grand Traverse Pallet for 12 years and says the best part of working at GTP is that it is close to home and he gets along with the people here.

To claim that a product is recyclable there should be recycling facilities available to at least 60 percent of the consumers where the product is sold. In the United States there is a comprehensive network of pallet recyclers serving the industrial and retail marketplace that far exceeds the 60% requirement. Pallet recycling has risen from 1 billion recycled in 1990 to 5 billion in 2010. Pallets make multiple trips before they reach the end of their useful lives.

Keith Vanderslik has been in the pallet business and a valuable member of the Grand Traverse Pallet Team for 35 years. He began his mill carrier with Drenth Brothers in 1982 after his 8th year there they sold the mill to GTP. At that time he tried a different line of work but came back after 3 years and has been here ever since. He is one of the large equipment drivers, especially the loader and takes care of inventory management. He is good with numbers, calculating board feet and getting the most efficient use out of every log. When asked what he likes best about working at GTP he said, “The stability, to be honest. It’s been 35 years with little or no unemplyment.”

GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
According to the European Confederation of Woodworking Industries, “Every cubic meter of wood used as a substitute for other building materials reduces CO2 emissions to the atmosphere by an average of 1.1 ton CO2. If this is added to the 0.9 tons of CO2 stored in wood, each cubic meter of wood saves a total of 2 tons CO2. Based on these figures, a 10% increase in the percentage of wooden houses in Europe would produce sufficient CO2 savings to account for about 25% of the reductions prescribed by the Kyoto Protocol.” (The Kyoto Protocol is an international treaty, which extends the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that commits State Parties to reduce greenhouse gases emissions, based on the premise that (a) global warming exists and (b) man-made CO2 emissions have caused it.)
