Today we pause here, and across the country to remember the thousands of lives lost on this day 20 years ago in the attacks on 9/11. We honor, not only those lives lost on that tragic day, but the thousands who are still suffering or have since died due to illness and injuries sustained in direct or indirect response to the terrorist attacks. Twenty years later the toll is still being paid and felt by the survivors, the families who lost loved ones, and the country that was forever changed by those 102 minutes. Today we stop to pay our respects particularly to the 343 firefighters who gave their all and made the ultimate sacrifice. And to recognize and thank the First Responders - police, fire and emergency service personnel, not only in Ashburn, but across our community and country – career and volunteers alike – that continue to serve, protect, and keep us safe each and every day.

AVFRD would like to announce that we have two new ALS (Advanced Life Support) providers! To obtain that level of distinction requires an immense amount of dedication. Starting with 1200 hours of classroom/clinical training, followed by 800 hours of training in the field. At that point they need to pass a written test, a skills evaluation and obtain a minimum of 75 calls for service in Loudoun with a preceptor. Start to finish it’s a minimum of 8-10 months. Considering they are volunteers, not paid/career individuals most are accomplishing this on top of their regular jobs and personal lives.

Think you have what it takes to join the ranks? Go to ashburnfirerescue.org and click on the “volunteer” tab.

September 1st kicks off National Preparedness Month and it seems apt that we are currently under a Tornado Watch until 7PM, a River Flood Watch until 7:45PM, and a Flash Flood Warning until 8:00AM September 2, 2021. This year’s theme is “Prepare to Protect”. Below is a link for a resource with information on how you can be ready for all kinds of disasters. The best way to ensure your family is safe is knowledge and being prepared! Remember to “turn around don’t drown”, it only takes less than 12 inches to carry away most cars. Be safe out there today!

With all of the destruction and trauma our members see and often being there for someone on their worst day ever, we really celebrate our successes and happy times. The engagements, the promotions, new homes, and the new additions to families are all life affirming reasons to be grateful. Recently we had two of our EMS members become nationally certified Paramedics. The process is grueling and time consuming, but both Sarah and Erica got through it with the support of the station and their families. And Friday, August 6th we welcomed a new baby for members Matt and Alexandra Quist. Little “Hank” was born at 10:05AM weighing 7lbs 2oz and 21 inches! Welcome Hank!!

Admin members with AVFRD very rarely get to experience the “other side”. Last Thursday I decided to change that. The goal for my ride along was to see what a normal duty crew night was like for our Operational members, specifically those who are part of suppression (i.e. firefighters). Career personnel staff the station seven days a week from 6:00AM to 6:00PM. Our crews run Sunday through Friday from 6:00 PM to 6:00AM, with Saturday’s covered on a rotating schedule. However they show up prior to their shift to check out the equipment to ensure everything is in working order and fully stocked (ambulances). Their evening starts with deciding to train or eat first, and the real decision is whether to pick up dinner or to cook. Let me tell you - these firefighters know how to cook! For training that night the focus was on working with our newly minted firefighters. After 6 months of training they basically start fresh learning from our more experienced members. They have to earn their “black hat” status. Another thing I learned is that 85-90% of what they do is train and clean. Each time a hose is pulled and used it then needs to be drained and racked. They’re pretty particular how everything goes back into place. That night they trained before AND after dinner well into the night. What I experienced was an extreme amount of camaraderie and bonding that speaks volumes about the cohesiveness of our crews. Truth be told you need to have an extreme amount of trust with the people who back you up on each and every call. There’s a good amount of good natured kidding, but the closeness of the crews makes me proud. Oh and did I mention that two of the firefighters were female? In the fire service only 4% of career firefighters are female, with a slightly higher percentage in the volunteer ranks. For the record, there is no difference in the training and expectations for males and females, either you can do it or you can’t. My night ended early and without getting to actually ride in the engine. Of course a call went out 5 minutes after I left. Maybe next time since it’s for sure I’ll be back!!

We wanted to take a moment to thank the multitudes of our neighbors who supported us last Saturday for our Chicken BBQ dinner. It truly takes a village and we could not have been as efficient (yep we’ve worked out the long line issues) without the help of the many volunteers from the Loudoun Youth Group. See ya’ll next time!

Once again we are on the recieving end of a much needed donation and overwhelmed with gratitude. On Tuesday, April 27 the Sterling Rotary Club dropped by to donate some PPE storage cases. It is generosity and donations such as this that has helped sustain us through the pandemic. Many thanks to Ingrid Stritch and the rest of the Rotarians!
