Running a profitable company is no game; but you’ve still got to play to win. That’s why it’s important to regularly evaluate the competitiveness of your business. http://owl.li/UBlu30jNztW

Every business owner launches his or her company wanting to be successful. But once you get out there, it usually becomes apparent that you’re not alone. To reach any level of success, you’ve got to be competitive with other similar businesses in your market.

When planning a company retreat, you may wield home field advantage by holding the event at your offices. But taking your team on the road could score you some stronger strategic ideas. http://owl.li/DnLD30j63lG

When a business decides to hold a retreat for its employees, the first question to be answered usually isn’t “What’s our agenda?” or “Whom should we invite as a guest speaker?” Rather, the first item on the table is, “Where should we have it?”

Every business wants to fuel its success with a high-octane sales process. To make that happen, you need an effective pipeline to get the right prospects to your sales team. http://owl.li/h5lO30iWNfy

An old business adage says, “Sales is a numbers game.” In other words, the more potential buyers you face, the better your chances of making sales. This isn’t completely true, of course; success also depends on execution.

Are your retirement plan communications like a “must read” book rocketing up the bestseller list or a boring sales circular that goes right into the trash? Here’s how to get the word out in a more exciting way. http://owl.li/pld130iGjQm

Employees tend not to fully appreciate or use their retirement benefits unless their employer communicates with them about the plan clearly and regularly. But workers may miss or ignore your messaging if it all looks and “sounds” the same. That’s why you might want to consider getting more cre...

For businesses, using social media can be like walking on eggshells. You want to get noticed, but you don’t want to embarrass yourself. Fine-tuning your objectives can help you find the right balance. http://owl.li/MHNp30ixmE4

Social media can be an inexpensive, but effective, way to market a company’s products or services. Like most businesses today, you’ve probably at least dipped your toe into its waters. Or perhaps you have a full-blown, ongoing social media strategy involving multiple sites and a variety of conte...

Today’s business world is a vast ecosystem of information and competition. Benchmarking can help your company swim with the big fish without getting gobbled up. http://owl.li/drJm30iphBA

You may keep a wary eye on your competitors, but sometimes it helps to look just a little bit deeper. Even if you’re a big fish in your pond, someone a little bigger may be swimming up just beneath you. Being successful means not just being aware of these competitors, but also knowing their approa...

Precious few businesses could last long if their operations were shut down by a fire, flood or some other unforeseen disaster. Measure your level of risk carefully and consider business interruption insurance. http://owl.li/2wu930i7FXO

Natural disasters and other calamities can affect any company at any time. Depending on the type of business and its financial stability, a few weeks or months of lost income can leave it struggling to turn a profit indefinitely — or force ownership to sell or close. One way to guard against this ...

Today’s businesses operate in an information-rich environment. Big data can help you put all that info to good and potentially profitable use. http://owl.li/WudO30hQ97M

Companies nowadays have a wide variety of outsourced services to choose from. But deciding whether to engage an external provider calls for a careful assessment of the benefits vs. risks. http://owl.li/ACnj30hK24R

For many years, owners of small and midsize businesses looked at outsourcing much like some homeowners viewed hiring a cleaning person. That is, they saw it as a luxury. But no more — in today’s increasingly specialized economy, outsourcing has become a common way to cut costs and obtain expert ...

A business can provide a family with wealth and a sense of pride for decades. But transitioning leadership from one generation to the next is difficult. Take a thoughtful approach to picking your replacement. http://owl.li/gO1l30hlXZJ

There’s an old saying regarding family-owned businesses: “Shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations.” It means the first-generation owner started in shirtsleeves and built the company up from nothing but, by the third generation, the would-be owner is back in shirtsleeves with nothing ...

Not sure why but the telephone is not MBO's favorite tool. I've learned to call them or stop by. I'm retired so time isn't as important to me as some. As for the accuracy of my returns, MBO is pretty good. MBO and the IRS are usually within a few dollars of each other. As for timeliness, I drop off my stuff then go in and my returned is filled on line. No fuss, no muss … write a check and walk out with my taxes all done. If the IRS and MBO (my) numbers don't match, then MBO figures it out and I deal with the IRS, e.g., usually write a check for ten dollars or so for underpayment. As for MBO charges, MBO is within the boundary of reasonableness, at least for my taxes. If and when I stop trusting MBO to do it's job and to put up with my procrastination, then my review will be a byte more interesting. Good folks.
