An Accenture survey finds 67% of executives say the lack of skills in risk management is slowing effectiveness of these positions. About 73% also note they have seen a climb in the “velocity, variety and volume” of data, which is preventing full effectiveness. Only 10% said that their risk personnel have the internal resources needed for their responsibilities.

Thank you to the residents of Onancock for electing me to the Town Council. I am excited to begin my term tonight and look forward to being a part of Onancock's future. We have a real treasure here and lots of opportunities on the horizon.

John Burdiss and Old Dominion Risk Advisors Announce Strategic Partnership:

Robert J. Bloxom, founder and president of Old Dominion Risk Advisers (“ODRA”) and John Burdiss of Cape Charles, VA announce a new strategic partnership effective July 15, 2016. ODRA provides customized risk management solutions to small and mid-sized financial institutions. Burdiss is an attorney and banking consultant with years of experience in the banking industry.
Bloxom retired in 2014 after a 28-year banking career focused on lending and enterprise risk management. Bob began his banking career in 1986 as a commercial banker and later became a chief risk officer, including serving as the chief credit officer, chief risk officer and finally chief operating officer for Hampton Roads Bankshares, a $2 billion regional bank holding company.
Burdiss began his banking career in 1972 as a bank examiner for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. He served as CEO of two community banks, senior lender at a bank holding company with a $240 million loan portfolio, and as a director at four community banks and one bank holding company.
John has provided expert testimony and litigation consultation for over 25 years in matters being litigated in over 30 states. He has been qualified in state/federal courts in 10 jurisdictions; many of his cases involved lending. He is also a practicing attorney, licensed in Virginia and West Virginia, he is a Certified Fraud Examiner, and he passed the national CPA exam.
Loan portfolio analysis, overall credit administration, board guidance and expert testimony/litigation support are among the areas where Bloxom and Burdiss will work together through ODRA. Burdiss will continue his legal practice, but will not be engaged as legal counsel in any bank litigation.
Bloxom and Burdiss will combine their collective experience and skills in furthering and expanding both firms’ missions to provide guidance to progressive, informed bank boards to achieve best practices that meet or exceed regulatory requirements and address the competitive dictates in the banking industry.

How A Risk Manager’s Job Varies Across Companies

Excellent article that highlights the importance of an effective risk management program within any company: http://blogs.wsj.com/riskandcompliance/2015/04/09/how-a-risk-managers-job-varies-across-companies/?mod=WSJ_hpp_sections_riskcompliance

The most important job of a risk manager, regardless of the company or sector, is to educate people about what risk really is: an indispensable part of every business decision, not a negative to be avoided.

Old Dominion Risk Advisors specializes in providing creative, customized management solutions to small and mid-sized financial institutions that will meet or exceed the standards of best practices of regulatory agencies, outside accountants and progressive and informed bank boards. We offer our clients reliable and innovative answers to the current day problems faced by the executive management and boards of community banks. We have a proven track record of success in building governance infrastructure and reporting that has met or exceeded the requirements of all banking stakeholders. Given our close working relationship with current and former banking regulators, we have a clear and current view of industry best practices and insight as to how the regulatory landscape may evolve.

The banking landscape has changed dramatically over the past decade. The expectations around strategic planning, management reporting, board reporting, Enterprise Risk Management best practices, credit underwriting and credit administration can overwhelm management teams already working at peak capacity. Our clients appreciate that working with Old Dominion Risk Advisors is a more global, efficient, more focused way to evaluate current operations or develop new reporting, policies and procedures than attempting to take on these specialized projects in-house. We create value for our clients by delivering turnkey solutions to today’s “hot button” issues in a confidential, reliable and forward-thinking manner.
