Congratulations Service to the Citizens award winners!

Today we were supposed to be honoring the 2020 Service to the Citizen Award winners, but COVID-19 had different plans for us. Fear➑️Learning➑️Growth

Has life kicked you in the Comfort Zone❓

There may have been times in life when you were in your Comfort Zone. Then there’s now. Most of us have been kicked right out of our Comfort Zone – and we didn’t even realize we were there!

So now I have 3️⃣ options: 1️⃣. Stay in my fear, 2️⃣. Run from my fears, or 3️⃣. Own my fears and move into the Learning Zone and choose to Grow.

This core question really hits home for me: β€œWho do I want to be during the COVID-19 crisis?” I don’t want to stay in my Fear Zone – it’s ugly and it’s not who I want to be. We can try to re-create some form of Comfort Zone (binging on Netflix and trips to the fridge). Or we can face our fears, and move➑️ into our Learning Zone, and into Growth.

Who can you call on for help? πŸ€” You don’t have to go through this alone. Get Help. And offer your help to others. πŸ‘πŸ½

It’s OK to recognize when you’re in the Fear Zone. 😬 It’s OK to ask for help rather than scrambling back into a false Comfort Zone. Move with courage into your Learning Zone and into the Growth Zone. Ask yourself each day πŸ“† – maybe each hour, if not every minute ⏰– Who do I want to be?

Reach Out, Connect, Care with FelΓ SolΓ‘-Carter

β€œA successful leader is one who can genuinely connect on an individual basis with those they lead.” FelΓcita SolΓ‘-Carter

Leadership is about influencing others – no matter who you are or where you are in an organization. And influencing – in a healthy, sustainable way – begins with caring ❀️. Do you actually care about the people who work with you? πŸ€”

I recently had the opportunity to speak 🎀 with FelΓ SolΓ‘-Carter, to gain her insights and experiences regarding how leaders need to β€œReach Out, Connect, and Care” for their people. FelΓ is an amazing leader, colleague and gracious friend.

Feli shared practical tips and strategies based on her many years’ experience as a Senior Executive with the Social Security Administration, and from her current client engagements as a Leadership Coach and Consultant.

Here are some highlights from our conversation (the full interview is available at https://youtu.be/HInFXewqKE0). Be encouraged and challenged, and take action: What small step 🦢🏻 can you take – right now – to reach out and make a direct connection 🀝 to someone? Feel free to tag that person in the comments. ⬇️

Reach Out, Connect, Care

Reach Out, Connect, Care

In a time like this, remember: your people need to know that you care. Yes, there is so much turmoil, so many tasks, and a lot of pressure – but in the midst of it all, don’t forget about your people. πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦

Leadership, from any level, is about influencing others to accomplish the Mission - to accomplish it with others, not at the expense of others.

Right now one of the most influential things you can do is to show others that you CARE.

❀️ CARE: Most importantly, you have to actually care. If you don’t, you better work on it. What kind of leader do you want to be? An inspiring motivator, or a jerk? Your choice. Here are some resources to help you build up your empathy skills: https://www.johnriordan.com/reachoutconnectcare

πŸ‘‹πŸΎCONNECT: Connect to your people in the way they want, not in the way you want. For some a quick text is all they need; others need a more personal phone call or video chat. You might not know what to say – don’t worry about it. Your intent is the most important thing.

πŸ“²REACH OUT: There are lots of options – so get going – take action. Send a text. Make a call. Send a card. Don’t worry about getting it perfect. Just get going.

So go ahead: Reach Out. Connect. Care. πŸ“²πŸ‘‹πŸΎβ€οΈ

QUESTIONERS-The Four Tendencies by Gretchen Rubin

β€œWhat’s your thinking behind this? Why do you think this is the right thing to do? Have you thought this through, or is this a random request?”

Do these questions sound like you (or someone you know)? If so, you (or they) might be a Questioner. Questioners resist External Expectations – they don’t just do what they’re told without thinking. They respond to Internal Expectations – once they decide something is worth doing, they’ll readily take action.

These questions are not about being β€œresistant” – they are about a β€œneed to know”. Don’t let the process of gaining (or giving) information turn into an argument!

Do you need clarification and information before you jump into action?

Obliger-The Four Tendencies by Gretchen Rubin

"Have you ever thought, β€œHow can I be so flat-out busy, but I don’t seem to follow through on things I’d really like to do, or on what I know I ought to do?”

If this sounds like you, you might be an β€œObliger” (The Four Tendencies by Gretchen Rubin). Obligers readily meet outer expectations, but don’t readily respond to inner expectations. If someone else expects them to do it, they’ll do it! But if no one else is involved, they struggle to take action.

The Key Strategy for Obligers is simple – Get Someone Else Involved!

Do you ever hesitate to take a risk? Ever struggle to close the gap between a β€œgood idea” and taking action?
20 years ago, after my wife Marg & I returned from Uganda, Cindy Zook took a risk on me. She taught me the ropes, mentored me, and helped me grow into an experienced Leadership & Organization Development Consultant. I’m honored to continue as her Associate these many years later!

I’m now excited to push beyond my comfort zone and step into the world of Media, offering useful tips and sharing the amazing things that leaders – at all levels, and from around the world – are doing to make the world a better place.

The Four Tendencies, by Gretchen Rubin, offers great insights into motivation and getting into action. In this video we touch on "Upholders”, who meet both inner and outer expectations. They are the "doers" of the world, but need to watch out for frustration with others, and burnout.
Clips on each of the Tendencies are posted on www.johnriordan.com under "Resources”.

Do you see yourself in one of these Tendencies? What helps you move into Action? I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments below. I look forward to getting connected and encouraging one another on this journey. Cindy Taylor Zook Gretchen Rubin

John Riordan

For over 30 years, John Riordan has been committed to challenging people and organizations to reach their full potential – first as a leadership program founder and director in East Africa, and now as an organization and leadership development consultant.

Cornerstone Leadership Academy, Uganda: John knows what it means to face the challenges of leadership and produce real results under extremely difficult conditions. Beginning in 1990, he invested 8 years in the future of a nation struggling to overcome a tragic history of genocide, racism and anarchy. What emerged was Cornerstone Leadership Academy – a comprehensive boarding school community for young adults focusing on leadership, character, spiritual and intellectual development. As co-founder and Director of the Academy, John and his family lived on-site for 8 years and dealt with the challenges of turning a revolutionary vision into a reality in the midst of racial and tribal tensions, scarce resources, and numerous physical hardships. (http://cornerstoneschoolsafrica.org)

Cindy Zook Associates: In 1999, John met Cindy Zook, an experienced Organization Development practitioner, who gave him an opportunity to learn from her as an Associate, and eventually Senior Consultant. (www.cindyzook.com)

Leadership Coaching: As the Lead Coach for the Public Service Leadership Academy, John has co-designed a uniquely challenging experience that will encourage participants to step out of their comfort zone and expand their leadership capacity. Over 20 years, John has provided challenging leadership programs for the US Army, NASA, CMS, and others (www.ThePSLA.org)

Organization Development: John has consulted with a broad range of federal, private sector and non-profit organizations over the past 20 years, conducting hundreds of planning, team building and training workshops ranging from large conferences (200+) to small intact teams. He is particularly adept at adapting the approach to fit his client’s needs and culture.

Style: John brings his diverse experiences to bear in working with organizations and individuals, helping them establish strategic and business plans, build strong teams, and fully develop their leadership capacity. He loves to help clients tackle the β€œreal work” that needs to be done – whether laying out business plans, establishing operating agreements, or identifying specific leadership challenges to overcome – and use that engagement to strengthen the team.

His strengths include a unique ability to quickly connect with a broad range of people of diverse styles and backgrounds, creativity in tailoring a session to the particular needs and style of the group, and tremendous flexibility that allows him to make real-time adjustments to ensure the right work is being done. While John naturally builds strong connections with his clients, he is committed to pushing them to get real results.

Family & Community Service: John and his wife Margaret, from Sydney, Australia, have four children and reside in Ashburn, Virginia. He has been actively involved with the Civil Air Patrol (Air Force Auxiliary), the Loudoun County Animal Shelter, the Honor Flight Network (bringing Veterans to DC) and does pro-bono work with several other community organizations.
