An incredible job by Officer Bixler Thursday. Clearly a friend, a co-worker, and a brother to fallen Officer Baxter. But so much more!!
You may recall we shared a photo of a statue late Thursday afternoon.
Please, if you have a moment, take the time and listen to what Officer Bixler had to say (especially just after the 5 minute mark in the video). Without a doubt, one of the most memorable, inspiring, and emotional parts of any service we have ever attended. Either it was allergy season or a lot of other people in attendance had something in their eye at the same time as well.
Officer Bixler, if you see this, please know we all stand with you, support you, and have the utmost respect for the job you did yesterday, the job you did before yesterday, and the job you continue to do. Please stay safe!! Stay strong. #LetsGoHelpSomebody

U.S. now says Syria likely used chemical weapons

Where there is smoke there is usually fire. The use of chemical weapons in the middle east, specifically nerve agents has been a topic of discussion throughout the past few weeks. The US government is now confirming that the Syrian government likely used Sarin nerve agent during recent attacks against its people. Although the Obama administration has stopped short of confirming with certainty that Sarin was deployed during recent fighting, other governments are more steadfast in their assessments.

What does this mean for us? Well, the primary concern for America is that varying amounts of Sarin and other chemical weapons are still available throughout the world. Given the recent events in Boston and constant terror threat we face, the possibility that chemical weapons could be used to harm our citizens is not so far fetched. Law enforcement, EMS, hospital staff and other first responders should remain vigilant and educated on the threats that face the "remote" parts of the world so we will not be caught by surprise when such dangerous substances appear in our communities.

The United States now believes the Syrian government has used chemical weapons against its people, according to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and a White House letter to Congress.

Ricin sent to US Senator in a letter. Danger was limited however as the off-site mail screening procedures intercepted the letter before it ever reached the Senator's office. When proper security measures are in place they can save lives and reduce risk.

Campus Police Unarmed at URI Gun Scare | WPRI.com

Liability. Liability. Liability. To think that we would expect anyone to respond to a call for service in which an armed gunman is attacking people is beyond comprehension. As a society and as leaders we are responsible for properly equipping our staff for their jobs. This is no different than telling our accountant that he has to ensure the accuracy of our financial records but that he cannot have a computer or calculator to do so.

Is your school or business putting unacceptable levels of risk on your staff because of outdated policies or a lack of appropriate safety equipment?

14 wounded in Texas college stabbing attack

As mentioned before...the real danger in school & workplace violence is the intent of the offender. Death and serious injuries can be inflicted with guns, knives, cars or any other type of weapon. It appears that this violent aggressor was planning to continue his attack until many more victims were injured but stopped and attempted to flee as soon as law enforcement arrived on scene and challenged him. Plan and coordinate with your local law enforcement agency and designate a liaison person who can immediately direct them to the incident location on your campus.

When family disputes spill over into schools...your kids become the collateral damage. Is the average Montessori school so safe that an armed person could not penetrate the school's security measures (if they even exist).

NRA to school officials: Train and arm a staffer

An abundance of evidence clearly shows the benefits of armed police officers at schools and the drastic reduction in injuries and deaths during a school violence incident...but are we too frugal as a society to pay for such protections that we are are forced to trust the safety of our children to volunteers with a few hours of firearms training?

Whether you agree with having an armed presence is schools or not...i think we can universally agree that we should invest in properly trained and equipped police officers at schools as opposed to the "low cost" option of volunteers with guns or teachers with guns.

Lehigh Valley hospitals confident in security protocol in wake of Lehigh Valley Hospital shooting

Are security measures optimally designed when a murder-suicide happens in a facility and nobody had any hopes of preventing it, or reducing the likelihood that it would happen inside the facility?

It is also difficult to digest the statement that "metal detectors would do more harm than good" in a medical facility.

Minneapolis School 'Food Fight' Turns Into Huge Brawl

Two factors to consider with this incident...
1- Is your school aggressively monitoring student interactions and tensions that can start small and quickly escalate to dangerous and uncontrolled situations?

2-Does your emergency response plan include provisions for student violence, student protests or demonstrations and other crowd control issues?
