re:con Conference

Each year, approximately 300 professionals gather at the Grand Traverse Resort in Traverse City, Michigan in order to better support individuals with disabilities and other barriers. This re:con convention allows professionals to come together for networking, workshops and discussions as well as engage with vendors and suppliers.

During the conference, vendors are invited to purchase a booth in order to sell their products. Micro Enterprise entrepreneurs from around the state are invited to do so at a discounted rate. For the entrepreneurs who may not be able to make the financial commitment for a vendor booth and hotel accommodations, there are scholarships available. This year, two of our own entrepreneurs from the Blue Boutique in downtown Adrian were awarded scholarships.

An opportunity like this is rare, but can make an impact on the lives of individuals that most people never understand. “It makes me feel happy that I could come and make money. Also that I can meet other people who have their own businesses and see what they make,” HalieBop’s Lotions, Potions & Crafts business owner. “I like coming to Traverse City to sell my things. I don’t think I have ever been here before! I like staying at the hotel and all the good food,” Yarn It Darn It business owner.

"Understanding The Past To Chart The Future of Supports and Services"
November 7 at 12pm
This session will reflect on the changes coming to our system that are driven by funders, families and people with disabilities and how service organizations must implement continuous quality improvement practices in their approaches to empowering people to lead self-directed lives. This session will also address some of the issues that direct support professionals across the country are telling NADSP about what they need to be successful and offer suggestions that promote the notion that "Quality is defined at the point of interaction." The session will conclude with information about NADSP’s E-Badge Academy which creates a new opportunity for DSPs to document their skills and work toward a national certification in direct support. Leading Teams Through Changing Times
With Justin Walworth
Wednesday November 7 at 12 pm

This is not a session on change management. Organizations are forced to deal with change, whether that is due to legislation, technology, new leadership or changing business models. This session will examine the leadership competencies to navigate change and build support and trust with those you lead. Utilizing the competing values model, you will gain the tools to assess your organization and identify the difference between the management competencies and the leadership competencies to navigate change. Finally this session will touch on practical tools for performance management and giving feedback along with conflict resolution and difficult conversations. Peckham Inc.
